It is a home to both the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, but on 3 days, you will spend a day trekking a habituated group of these rare species in Mgahinga’s tropical forests.

Mgahinga National Park, located in Kisoro Southwestern Uganda has only Nyakagezi group set for gorilla trekking adventures. The park was founded in 1991 purposely to offer refuge to now endangered mountain gorillas and today, it protects a range of other wildlife from forest elephants, buffaloes, duikers, bush pigs, bushbucks to over 184 species of birds. Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Mgahinga National Park in Kisoro

Get up early with the bright sun, meet your driver guide and depart for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park located in South-western Uganda. Your journey will cover about 8-10 hours’ drive and en-route, expect to pass through a number of towns. You will be driven along the Masaka-Mbarara-Kisoro route and en-route, you will make a stopover at the Equator crossing for photography then lunch at Igongo cultural center. From Igongo, proceed to check in at your pre-booked accommodation facility at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Day 2: Mgahinga gorilla trekking experience

After a hefty breakfast, go meet the park official at Ntebeko where briefing on gorilla trekking rules will be conducted. Some of the rules for gorilla trekking you should expect to be briefed on include maintaining a distance of about 8-10m away from gorillas, strictly 8 people visit a single gorilla family, when coughing please cover the mouth, or nose when sneezing, no touching gorillas, no use of flashlight when taking photos, keep your voices low, and more. It is today when the park official allocates park guides to accompany your group for actual gorilla trekking to explore Nyakagezi gorilla family.

A gorilla trek is unpredictable, it can last as short as 2 hours or 6 hours depending on how fast you walk, the nature of the habitat and location of gorillas. By its nature, it is advisable to carry some bottled water, snacks and don’t forget a walking stick. When you have finally located a gorilla group, the park guide will allow you to stay for only 1 hour with mountain gorilla, taking pictures and have a deep understanding on their daily behaviors. Get back to the accommodation afterwards, relax the whole evening and overnight stay.

Day 3: Departure

Early morning after you have had breakfast, you will meet your driver and leave with a pack of lunch from the lodge. Begin your 9-10 hours’ drive journey back to Kampala or Entebbe while enjoying the countryside breathtaking landscape characterized by rolling hills. Arrive at Kampala or Entebbe late in the evening, marking the end of 3 days gorilla trek in Mgahinga NP.
