Founded in 1926 as a Game Reserve, Murchison Falls National Park is one of the oldest parks and it is the largest of the 10 Uganda National Park. Covering up to 3840sq.kms of land area, Murchison Falls NP is where you can find Murchison Falls, a powerful waterfall known to squeeze itself into a narrow gorge or rock of about 8m wide and then plunges 45m.
The 3840sq.kms Murchison Falls NP is divided into 2 by the Victoria Nile creating the Southern and Northern sections. It also inhabits a range of mammal species including hyenas, lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, hippos, the Rothschild giraffes, antelopes like oribis, hartebeest, kobs; primates like chimpanzees, baboons, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and over 451 birds, plus the huge Nile crocodiles.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Visit Murchison Falls National Park & rhino trekking
Enjoy a hefty breakfast back in a hotel in Kampala, after, set off to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino tracking. Briefing about the rhino tracking activity will be done by the official upon arrival and you get to a walk to see the large rhinos. Take 2 hours less or more and after, return and proceed to have lunch.
After rhino trek, lunch in Masindi town, next will be drop off to safari lodge in Murchison Falls National Park taking the Southern gate (Kichumbanyobo). Note, driving to Murchison Falls NP covers from 6-7 hours depending on driver’s speed, mechanical conditions of the car, etc.
Day 2: Game drive, launch trip & the top of the falls hike
Begin your day with a hefty breakfast, after, leave the wilderness lodge for an early morning game drive 3-4 hours via the Northern game tracks in Murchison Falls NP. Get to see a range of wildlife while in your 4×4 vehicle including the Rothschild giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, antelopes, warthogs and more. After an exciting guided game drive, return to chill at the lodge and in the afternoon, get to Paraa for a boat or launch cruise.
A launch trip on Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls covers 2-3 hours and it allows you watch the huge Nile crocodiles basking, hippos swimming, aquatic birds plus many wildlife species foraging at the river banks. Today’s activities combine a hike to the top of the falls, 45 minutes and at the top, enjoy view of it forcing itself into a narrow rock of 8m.
Day 3: Depart back to Kampala/Entebbe
Start your morning with breakfast, after, check out and board with pack of lunch provided by the lodge. Return to Kampala or Entebbe, drive via Luweero with a chance to grab some fresh fruits like pineapples.
