Your 3 days Nyiragongo hike will take place near Virunga national Park where this mountain is located. The Virungas are a chain of volcanic mountains located along the border of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Nyiragongo is among a few active volcanoes in the whole world and you will spend a night at the summit.
There are more 7 mountains within the Virunga massif and these include the Sabyinyo, Muhabura, Gahinga, Karisimbi, Bisoke and others.
Itinerary
You will arrive in Kigali at the airport and our driver guide will pick you up and take you through a briefing about this 3 days Nyiragongo hike. Later drive to Gisenyi town where you will have a stop over to relax and have your lunch as well. Afterwards, cross the border of Goma to Democratic Republic of Congo and check in at the lodge for next day’s activities.
Have breakfast in the morning, and head out for an adventurous hike to the summit of Nyiragongo mountain containing the largest boiling lava lake, which is very active and last erupted in May 2021. The hike will take about 5-6 hours to reach the summit and if you are not energetic enough to carry the luggage, you can hire porters to help you carry.
While on the hike, keep looking at different wildlife and birdlife in the forest. You will successfully reach the summit where you will almost not see the green vegetation because it is destroyed by the hot lava that erupts from the lake. Spend a night at the peak as you watch the boiling lake which is very interesting.
After breakfast from the mountain camp, start to descend back to the starting point where you will meet your driver guide for a transfer back to Kigali crossing via Goma border. Have lunch from Kigali and if you wish you can have a short city tour while waiting for the time of departure flight.
