Detailed itinerary
Day 1: 6-7 hours’ drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Enjoy an early breakfast, after, you will be picked up by a tour leader in Rwanda. He will give highlight of what you should expect while on unforgettable 6 days primates and adventure safari in Rwanda. Later, set off for half day trip to the Southern Province of Rwanda taking the Butare route. Expected areas for en-route stopover: Kings Palace, Museum and lunch at Butare, after, get to Nyungwe to check in at your respective lodges.
Day 2: Tracking chimpanzees, canopy walk- Nyungwe Forest
Meet your driver guide ready for your chimpanzee tracking expedition 2-4 hours. First, briefing on guidelines to be followed during chimpanzee tracking and allocation of park guides. At 8:00am, you will be accompanied to search for our closest relative – the chimpanzees whose DNA is about 98% same to that of humans. The idea of tracking chimpanzees is to let you have a deep understanding about their daily behaviors, taking pictures and more.
After, you will be led back and in general, while tracking, expect to come across more than chimpanzees. Nyungwe Forest hosts plenty of primates including silver monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, colobus monkeys, baboons etc which will be sighted plus birds especially Albertine rift endemics and forest avifaunal species.
In the afternoon, the best way to end the primate day will be undertaking a canopy walk 2 hours. Explore the 50m high suspended walk way while viewing incredible floral and faunal species.
Day 3: Visit the next destination Volcanoes National Park
Transfer from Nyungwe Forest to Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri will be early after breakfast and check out of the lodge. Take the Lake Kivu route, enjoy its spectacular view and the rolling hills, have lunch en-route then continue to check in at your gorilla safari lodge.
Day 4: Tracking Rwanda gorillas, Volcanoes National Park
Enjoy a hefty breakfast, after, leave the lodge with packed lunch, bottled water plus essentials for gorilla trekking. You will report to Kinigi where briefing on gorilla guidelines will be done by the park official. Allocation of habituated gorilla groups will be conducted the same time and the park guides lead you through the forest at 8:00am, taking up to 2-6 hours trekking.
Once you have met a group of endangered mountain gorillas, expect full 1 hour to take pictures, learn their daily behaviors, etc. After, it will be the park guide to lead you back to the briefing where you will be transferred to the lodge for relaxation. In the evening, there will be an option of visiting Iby’Iwacu village, a great opportunity for enthusiastic cultural travelers to explore and experience Rwandese cultures, traditions.
Day 5: Trekking golden monkeys, Rwanda Volcanoes NP
Breakfast early morning, later, briefing at Kinigi offices of Volcanoes N/Park about golden monkey tracking rules. By 8:00am meet your park guide ready to lead you through the 2-4 hours of searching for the charming golden monkeys. One hour will also given for a magical encounter like it is for gorilla treks. Lunch will be enjoyed on return from tracking golden monkeys and you relax, in the evening, either remain at the lodge or visit the Twin Lakes.
Day 6: Volcanoes N/P to Kigali, 2-3 hours’ drive
Transfer to Kigali capital city from Volcanoes N/Park located in Ruhengeri, Northwestern Rwanda and driving time will be 2-3 hours. Arrive early and continue with city tour, visit the Rwanda genocide site in Kigali, the national museum, craft shops, etc then have lunch. After, either drop off to the hotel or airport for departure.
